The Shiawassee County Fair has the legal authority to require drug testing
under the Animal Industry Act 466 of 1998 as amended in Section
40(3): A fair,exhibition, exposition, or show authority may require
additional testing or vaccination of animals before entry or during the
fair, exhibition, exposition or show.
If a violation will require drug testing, the complaints must be filed
within 2 hours of the end of show. A $500.00 fee will be required to
be paid in the Fair Office by the complainant at the time complaint is
filed by cash or credit/debit card only-NO CHECKS The exhibitor and
or parents who the complaint is against will have the opportunity to
read the written complaint. Drug testing will be performed by the Fair
Veterinarian following outlined procedure listed in the fair book. If tests
results are positive the complainant will have their money returned to
them and the exhibitor will be responsible for incurred fees and forfeitures
outlined in the disqualification procedures on page 9 rule #6 in the
Fair book.
Animals that return test results with levels of drug residue above the
permissible standards maintained by the FDA will be disqualified. This
includes but is not limited to: tranquilizers not labeled for livestock use,
anti-inflammatory, or pain medications not labeled for livestock use,
antibiotics administered without regard for fair-specified withdrawal
dates (unless prescribed by a veterinarian), and feed additives that are
not labeled for the specie in question, this includes antibiotics used in a
species not approved for on the label.
MANDATORY
REQUIREMENTS
All livestock youth exhibitors, leaders, advisors, and parents need to
be aware that the following must be made available to the correct
department superintendents before animals canbe unloaded at the fair.
IMPORTANT
- Exhibitors will (in effect) sign the Exhibitor's
Agreement when they sign the entry form at the time
they enter the Fair. No separate Exhibitors Agreement
paperwork will be required.
• Dairy and Beef - Official identification is required and must be in
place prior to arrival at the fairgrounds. Official identification refers
to the Radio Frequency Identification tag (RFID). Market steers must
also have the official plastic Shiawassee County Fair ear tag, which
was placed in the animal's ear at the time it was enrolled in January
on the Fairgrounds.
• Sheep and Goats - ID may consist of USDA scrapie tags (required
for market goats), tattoo, or electronic identification. Registration
papers must accompany tattoos or electronic ID's (exhibitor to
provide the reader) at the time of check-in.
